Q: Why sleep is important?
A: 1)Sleep Is a Basic Human Need
Sleep is a natural part of everybody's life, but many people know very little about how important it is, and some even try to get by with little sleep. Sleep is something our bodies need to do; it is not an option. Even though the exact reasons for sleep remain a mystery, we do know that during sleep many of the body's major organ and regulatory systems continue to work actively. Some parts of the brain actually increase their activity dramatically, and the body produces more of certain hormones.

Sleep, like diet and exercise, is important for our minds and bodies to function normally. In fact, sleep appears to be required for survival. Rats deprived of sleep die within two to three weeks, a time frame similar to death due to starvation.

An internal biological clock regulates the timing for sleep. It programs each person to feel sleepy during the nighttime hours and to be active during the daylight hours. Light is the cue that synchronizes the biological clock to the 24-hour cycle of day and night.

2)Problem Sleepiness Has Serious Consequences
Sleepiness due to chronic lack of adequate sleep is a big problem in the United States and affects many children as well as adults. Children and even adolescents need at least 9 hours of sleep each night to do their best. Most adults need approximately 8 hours of sleep each night.

When we get less sleep (even one hour less) than we need each night, we develop a "sleep debt." If the sleep debt becomes too great, it can lead to problem sleepiness – sleepiness that occurs when you should be awake and alert, that interferes with daily routine and activities, and reduces your ability to function. Even if you do not feel sleepy, the sleep debt can have a powerful negative effect on your daytime performance, thinking, and mood, and cause you to fall asleep at inappropriate and even dangerous times.

Problem sleepiness has serious consequences – it puts adolescents and adults at risk for drowsy driving or workplace accidents. In children, it increases the risk of accidents and injuries. In addition, lack of sleep can have a negative effect on children's performance in school, on the playground, in extracurricular activities, and in social relationships.

Inadequate sleep can cause decreases in:

~Performance
~Concentration
~Reaction Times
~Consolidation of Information Learning

Inadequate sleep can cause increases in:

~Memory Lapses
~Accidents and Injuries
~Behavior Problems
~Mood Problems

3)Signs of Sleep Disorders
A child who has not obtained adequate nighttime sleep is at high risk for symptoms of physical and/or mental impairment. The child may fall asleep in school, have difficulty concentrating in school and other activities, and/or exhibit behavioral problems. Some children who are sleepy become agitated rather than lethargic and may be misdiagnosed as hyperactive. Not getting enough sleep is one cause of problem sleepiness. Undiagnosed/untreated sleep disorders can also cause problem sleepiness. Children as well as adults can suffer from sleep disorders. Parents should talk to their pediatrician about a possible sleep disorder if their child has any of the following:

~Snoring
~Breathing Pauses During Sleep
~Problems with Sleeping at Night
~Difficulty Staying Awake During the Day
~Unexplained Decrease in Daytime Performance

Q: Why do we tend to feel sleepy after a good meal?
A: The two most biologically "expensive" organs to run are, in order, the brain and the intestines. When you are digesting a large meal, a lot of the body's blood supply is diverted to around the intestines, both to carry the necessary oxygen to the tissues, and to pick up nutrients passed through into the body. This leaves your limbs feeling a bit heavy, and your brain (without as much of an oxygen supply, as it has been temporarily diverted) a bit sleepy.

Q: Why do people feel sleepy while reading?
A: Reading is an almost hypnotic action characterized by rhythmic eye movement, a relaxed physical position and a focus of attention. This combination produces somnolence and a decreased alertness unless the subject that you are reading calls for diverse intellectual operations as i.e. calculations and deductive thinking.

Q: Why do rainy days make us sleepy?
A: Most of us feel sleepy on the rainy day. Different people have different views about this aspect. This sleepiness may be because of the production of serotonin in our body in the dark rainy days are low. Serotonin is regulated by sunlight which effects mood.

Also the production of melatonin is increased in the dark i.e. in the rainy day. It is produced by a gland in the brain known as pineal gland. Scientists say that its formation is less in the sunlight and hence we didn’t feel much sleepy on a clear day as compared to the rainy day.

One reason for this could be that moisture gives relaxation to our body like we feel much relaxed after the shower Also the rhythm raindrops falling on the earth. The pleasant climate decrease in our daily activities. Increase of quietness and stillness and the mental caress that we get from rain lead us to feel sleepy on the cool rainy day.

Q: Why do we yawn when we’re sleepy?
A: 1)We yawn because we need extra oxygen. Our body senses we're running low on oxygen, and forces us to take an extra big gulp of air.

Problem: Why don't we yawn after running a mile? Surely, if there were ever a time we needed more oxygen, that would be it.

2)Yawning is healthy for our lungs. Perhaps, every now and then, we get pockets and wrinkles in our lungs. A deep breath and a good stretch will smooth these wrinkles out. We know that yawning is very common among creatures with a backbone, including fish, crocodiles, and humans. All these creatures have a special fluid in their lungs, and yawning might spread this fluid out.

Problem: This doesn't explain why yawning is "contagious."

3)Yawning is a form of social communication. A yawn is a sign we're sleepy. If lots of us start to yawn, then it's time for the whole group to go to bed. It's an unspoken agreement that we'll take a nap after Thanksgiving Dinner, and not sneak away to eat the leftover turkey.

Problem: This solution doesn't tell us why yawning is so common among creatures with a backbone. What's a goldfish trying to tell us when it yawns? Also, we yawn when we get up in the morning, even after a good night's rest. Does this mean we should go back to bed? That's a nice thought, but it doesn't explain yawning.

But there is one idea about yawning that everyone knows to be true. It's contagious. If you yawn in class, you'll probably notice a few other people will start yawning, too. Even thinking about yawning can get you yawning. How many times have you guys yawned while reading this article? YAWN!! Haha.
